Top Careers For Women In This Economy

In order to land a quality job during these tough economic times you will need to have some sort of advanced education in the form of a bachelors or masters degree.  Employers are seeking qualified individuals who hold these advanced degrees over other applicants who just have an associates degree or high school diploma.  There are several great career opportunities for women who are seeking these degrees from institutions of higher learning.  Among the top 5 careers for women are nursing, business, paralegal, criminal justice, and marketing.

Nursing

Nursing is probably the fastest growing industry in the country.  With more and more Americans in need of medical services, hospitals are looking for qualified nurses to help with the increase demand in patient care.  Nurses actually earn a decent starting salary in their first year on the job.  The average salary for nurses is in the $60 to $75k per year range and can top out above $90,000.  Many colleges and universities offer nursing programs ranging from 2 to 4 years based on the type of nursing you would like to perform.  If you want to a nurse in the ER or intensive care unit you will need to have more education than a registered nurse.

Business

A business degree is another top career choice for women.  More companies are looking to diversify their workplace with the addition of female employees, which gives the company a chance to benefit from the female perspective.  Most 4 year universities will have some sort business school or economic degree that you can earn, allowing you to turn that into a success career in the business field.  Most entry level business positions will make $30 to $40k per year with a potential to earn well over $100,000 when you move into a senior management position.  Business careers are so popular because they offer a chance at stability and job security, especially if you work a large corporation.  These large companies are structured so that they promote from within and give their employees the chance to move into management positions and earn a large salary.

Paralegal

Being a paralegal is a great way to get in the law field without having to go to law school.  Having a degree in English, Social Sciences and even Business is a great way to get your foot in the door at a law firm as a paralegal.  While you do not need a degree in law to become a paralegal many graduates will work in this position as a way to get ready to go to law school.  The experience earned while working as a paralegal is looked upon highly by law schools when submitting your application.  While paralegals do not make the most money in the world averaging $40 to $50k per year the real value from this position is the experience you gain while working at a law firm.

Criminal Justice

Criminal justice is another up and coming field for women.  A career in criminal justice offers a wide variety of perks and career growth potential no matter which type of position you decide to take.  One of the best parts about the criminal justice field is that once you land a job with one agency whether it be a local police department, FBI or other federal law enforcement agency you can easily transfer to another agency.  The experience you gain in one field is transferable to another position with a different agency.  If you are a women looking to get into the criminal justice field you should look at attending a school that offers a criminal justice degree.  While it is possible to get into this career path with a different degree such as social sciences or other liberal arts degree, if you have a criminal justice degree you will stand a much better chance of landing your dream job.

Marketing

Marketing is an extremely popular career choice for many women.  A degree in marketing allows you to be creative during your daily job leading to a fulfilling position at many companies.  Every business out there needs some sort of marketing to drum up more business which makes this a top career choice for women.  You can get a degree in marketing from just about any college or university with most of them offering this specific degree within their business school.  Most entry level marketing positions pay between the $35 and $45k per year range, but there is a great potential to earn a lot of money later in your career; and they’re fun.  A director of marketing at a large company will easily make over $100,000 a year, making marketing one of the most sought after careers for women.
