If you are looking to start a career in some of the fastest growing industries, Mohawk Valley Community College’s Center for Corporate and Community Education is offering five new medical programs on their Rome and Utica campuses.  It is no secret that the healthcare industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, which makes these five new programs that much more appealing to students who are seeking a degree with which they will actually be able to land a job upon graduation.

The five new programs being offered at Mohawk Valley Community College are as follows:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Personal Care Aide
  • Barrier Precautions and Infection Control
  • Medical Transcription (Online)

The phlebotomy program will provide students with the certification and skills necessary to work as a phlebotomist in a hospital, laboratory or medical office in the state of New York.  These courses will cover a wide range of topics within the science including classroom and clinical instruction.  The cost of the program is $499 and classes will meet both Mondays and Wednesdays on the Rome campus or Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Utica campus.

The certified nursing assistant program is a 120 hour course that is divided between 90 hours of classroom work and 30 hours of supervised clinical time.  After students complete this course they are eligible to take the national certification exam.  This program will cover a wide variety of topics including: communication and interpersonal skills, universal precautions, infection control, safety, basic nursing skills, personal care skills, mental health, social service needs, care of cognitively impaired residents, basic restorative services, and residents’ rights.

For students interested in becoming a certified Personal Care Aide, the PCA program is a short 40 hour course that has both classroom and laboratory training.  This course will give students the skills necessary to work in a home care setting.

The Barrier Precautions and Infection Control course is required by the New York State Education Department for licensed professionals such as physicians, physicians’ assistants, specialist assistants, dentists, dental hygienists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, optometrists, and podiatrists.  This one time course costs only $35 and is offered in October on the Utica Campus and in November on the Rome Campus.

The final new program being offered is an online medical transcription course.  This program was designed by real world medical transcriptionists in an effort to provide the tools and experiences necessary to succeed in the medical transcription field.  The online training course provides 640 hours of training and even offers a free laptop to students who register before Sept. 27th.
