There is no doubt that the federal government is standing by their word and reinvesting in the education of America’s youth. Recently Fort Hays State University in Kansas was awarded a $250,000 federal grant, which will be used to purchase equipment that will attract and prepare healthcare professionals. 90% of the $250,000 grant will come from the federal government with the other 10% being awarded by the university.

This grant money will be used to purchase equipment that will become part of the Nursing Equipment and Technology Enhancement project, which is designed to extend distance education opportunities, expand simulation settings, and enhance chances for advanced research and laboratory experience. This complex project will involve several departments at Fort Hays State University including the Department of Nursing, Department of Biological Sciences and the Center for Teach Excellence and Learning Technology.

The large $250,000 grant money will be used to make three major purchases. The first purchase will be equipment for a two-way interactive classroom studio that will be used to help with distance learning. The second purchase will be computerized simulators that are used to create life-like situations to train students, while the third purchase will be enhancements to biotechnology equipment that is used for educational and research opportunities.

As you can see this federal grant money will greatly enhance the learning environment at the small Fort Hays State University. Without the help of the government small time institutions such as these will have a difficult time providing their students with the resources necessary to further their education.

Being able to purchase state of the art technologies such as manikins that are used in simulation settings is an invaluable resource for FHSU. These teaching tools are going to make their nursing department much more attractive to local students who wish to enter the healthcare field, bringing more money to the university that they will again be able to reinvest in their Nursing Equipment and Technology Enhancement project.
