Yesterday we published a report on the best jobs for women, and today we’d like to follow up with a similar story for men.

With today’s struggling economy, many people are looking for new career paths to increase their income level.  Most careers these days will require a college degree; however, you can still find some careers out there where you only need an associates degree or high school diploma.  Two careers where you may not need a college degree include firefighter and cop, while a career in business, accounting and engineering will almost certainly require some form of higher education.

Firefighter:

A career as a firefighter is one that is often overlooked in society.  People take for granted the service that these brave men and women provide for their community until the time that they need them themselves.  A career as a firefighter can be very rewarding and fulfilling as you gain a sense of accomplishment when you are able to save someone’s home or life during a fire.  Knowing that you are aiding your community is an added benefit when you choose this career path.  To become a firefighter you need to pass a series of physical and mental tests to prove you are capable of handling the stress that comes with the position.  However, once you pass these tests you can bank on a long and secure career.

Cop:

Much like a firefighter a career as a cop has the added benefit of knowing that you are doing something productive with your career.  Instead of being stuck in a cubicle all day crunching numbers for the boss, you are out on the streets protecting the citizens and keeping everyone safe.  This high sense of self worth far outweighs the slightly low yearly salary for most police officers, which falls in the $50 to $60k range.  Also, as is the case with becoming a firefighter you will need to pass a series of mental and physical tests in order to start a career as a police officer.  These tests are administered during a several week period known as police academy.  Each city’s police department has different police academy requirements so you will need to check with the department you wish to apply to see what their requirements are to become a patrol officer.

Business:

Business has always been one of the top 5 career choices for men.  A degree in business can lead to a wide variety of careers from project manager to director of business development.  A business degree allows you to learn the important aspects of running a business so that you can make informed decisions when you start your career with a large company.  Business careers are popular due to the high chance of promotions within one company.  When you hold a degree in business you will have a well rounded education that will enable you to understand several aspects of company you are working for.  If you show some initiative and hard work, most companies will reward their employees with promotions to higher paying positions with more responsibilities, making you work that much more enjoyable as you can see the results of your hard efforts.  A standard business degree can land you a position with a $45 to $55k a year salary, with an MBA you can easily make over $100,000 a year as a business consultant, which is one of the reasons this career path is so popular.

Accountant:

Within the business world a career in accounting can be one of the better ones out there.  Every company needs an accounting department leading to lots of accounting jobs on the market, which makes this career choice so popular.  Accounting is certainly not for everyone, but if you like numbers and dealing with finances then you can have a rewarding career as an accountant.  Because accounting is not a skill everyone has the pay for an entry level position is quite good and usually starts at about $45,000 per year.  Senior accountants and CPAs can make close to, if not over, $100,000 annually, making this a very lucrative career choice.  Most colleges and universities will offer an accounting degree either separately or as part of a business degree.

Engineer:

Of all the career choices out there an engineer is probably the most important to society.  Without engineers we would not develop new technologies or improve on our existing ones.  Engineers create, design, and enhance products that we use in our everyday lives.  Becoming an engineer takes a lot of hard work and studying but once you do earn your degree you can have a very rewarding career.  Engineers are also some of the highest paid professionals starting out around $60,000 a year and easily clearing $100,000 to $120,000 a year after several years in the field.  Depending on what parts of science you like you can choose to be a specific engineer such as electrical, mechanical or chemical, which will influence what types of products you can help design or enhance once you graduate.
