Looking back at the four years (or more!) you spent at college, ever wish you had taken more exciting and memorable courses?  Topics you never thought would ever step foot into the classroom are now popping up at schools around country.  Here are the 7 weirdest college courses you wish you took:

7. Maple Syrup – Alfred University, New York

maple syrup
You have probably never thought twice about Maple Syrup.  If you’re lucky enough to get the real thing on your pancakes you probably enjoyed every bite of it.  At Alfred University, students can take a course called “Maple Syrup – The Real Thing” and learn about every aspect of the sweet treat, from production to sales.

6. YouTube – Pitzer College – Claremont, California

Youtube

Ever find yourself wasting half the day away watching YouTube videos when you were supposed to be writing a paper?  At Pitzer College in Clarement you can enroll in a course to study about the impacts that YouTube has had on society and watch all day.  You also learn about the nature of creating YouTube content and even upload your own videos.

5. Cyberporn and Society – State University of New York at Buffalo

Cyberporn

This class is unique in the fact that not only does it cover an obscene (but very real) aspect of our society, but it actually shows porn in class.  According to Time there are several universities across the country that offer courses covering different aspects of pornography, such as NC-17 films and X-rated Japanese comics.

4. Oprah Winfrey – University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Oprah

Though this may seem like another class where you just watch TV all day, there is actually a lot of learning to be done about one of the most influential women in the world.  In this course entitled “History 298 Oprah Winfrey – The Tycoon” students learn about race, gender and class issues through the cultural rise of the famous talk show host.

3. Harry Potter – Frostburg State University, Maryland

Harry Potter

The Science of Harry Potter, a course offered at Frostburg State University, Maryland, combines fantasy with reality and attempts to explain what is and isn’t possible in the realm of Harry Potter.  The course uses the book “The Science of Harry Potter: How Magic Really Works,” by Roger Highfield and is very popular on the college campus.

2. The Simpsons – University of California, Berkeley

The Simpsons

Ever wish you could turn watching TV into a college class?  This is probably the closest you can get to that dream through a philosophy course offered at the UC Berkeley campus.  It isn’t all fun and games however.  The course uses a text called, “The Simpsons and Philosophy: The D’oh of Homer,” and covers a range of philosophical topics.

1. Starcraft – University of California, Berkeley

Starcraft

Not to our surprise, Berkeley makes another appearance offering a course on the art of war via Starcraft.  In this student-led course, students learn about the various tactics and strategies involved in the massively popular game.  GamePro even showed up to document the first day of class.

Any of these classes would have taught me more than 3/4 of the classes I’m taking now.
