We all have heard of the notion that you get what you pay for, but this isn’t always true when it comes down to some careers. Salary levels can depend on an array of factors, ranging from a worker’s experience or skill level, to factors like company budget or the condition of the economy. Some jobs don’t earn as much as we might have thought and a lot of the time it comes from the lack of recognition the job receives. Below is a list of some careers that don’t earn a fortune and don’t receive enough recognition for their work. You be the judge.
1) Police Officers – $53,428 per year

You hate them when they stop you for speeding, but when it comes down to it, these are the fine men and women who keep us safe, putting their lives on the line both on and off duty. They deal with all kinds of criminals on a daily basis, work night shifts and spend much of their time putting together necessary but otherwise mind-numbing reports.
2) Teachers – $50,963 per year

You think your kids are a handful? Teachers have to manage an entire classroom full of them. And because of the deteriorating education system in the United States, teachers are finding it more and more difficult to teach with increasing classroom sizes, limiting funds and angry parents.
3) Rehabilitation Counselors – $27,617 per year

Rehabilitation counselors are crucial to the healing process after both mental and physical ordeals. They encounter complex issues on a regular basis, ranging from taking care of patients with down syndrome or schizophrenia to helping accident victims get back on their feet again or even helping recovering addicts. Their hours do not fall into the typical nine-to-five schedule so working night shifts are not uncommon.
4) Paramedics – $46,184 per year

The quality of care and speed of arrival in an emergency situation can mean the difference between life and death. These first responders are entrusted with one of the most time-sensitive jobs in the country and need to be paid enough so that they can stay at the top of their game.
5) Security Guard – $33,195

Security guards, much like police officers, risk their own safety for the well being of others. They must confront criminals who might be wielding weapons in order to protect the public from harms way. They are often times the prime target for criminals attempting to rob a business.
